Yes, this is true! I got happier and healthier, and I mean all aspects of health--spiritual, mental, emotional and physical, by basing my life on the following premise, laid out in this quote by the American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892):
"RE-EXAMINE ALL YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD... DISMISS WHAT INSULTS YOUR SOUL."
Refusing insults to your soul is the key to our overall well being. It is what insults our soul that causes it grief and stops us from thriving. Yes, at a deep level of consciousness the soul is above and beyond the human experience of our worldly existence... yet it is true that the environment we provide for our soul either nurtures it, allowing us a positive and dynamic experience of a life well-lived, or puts our soul to sleep, turning us into machines that simply eat, sleep, defecate and procreate, living meaningless and miserable lives.
So far so good, you say, but how can one know what insults the soul? If I asked you to tell me all the things you didn't like about your life, chances are these are things in direct opposition to the needs and yearnings of your soul. One excellent way to figure out what you like if you don't have a clue as to what it is, is to figure out what you DON'T LIKE and DON'T WANT. This then becomes the starting point to discovering what's the opposite of these and you can start building a list of what you DO LIKE and DO WANT.
Make it your first business to get to know your soul and you'll be on your way to protect it from what insults it!
