Children listen with their eyes

This wonderful message found its way to me again today, and I thought I should post it here. Its true that children watch us and then use us as role models--it is imperative, therefore, that we don't lose sight of this fact.

************************

WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite cake for me and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I heard you say a prayer, and I knew there is a God I could always talk to and I learned to trust in God.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have to help take care of each other.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you give of your time and money to help people who had nothing and I learned that those who have something should give to those who don't.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it and I learned we have to take care of what we are given.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't feel good and I learned that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come from your eyes and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's all right to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared and I wanted to be everything that I could be.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I learned most of life's lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person when I grow up.

When you thought I wasn't looking, I looked at you and wanted to say, 'Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking.'

Let us be the role models our children deserve,

Switching your lights out today...

I said a few weeks ago that I would take a break from posting here on Saturdays. I'm bending that rule today because of it being Earth Day and all the excitement about turning off our lights for an hour. I'm writing this after the event, and am happy to have 'connected' with millions with the common goal of saving energy and supporting action being taken to help the cause of global warming, by turning my lights off as well.

The Earth needs our tender loving care - do get involved in an orgtanization of your choice... it's the only way individuals can make their presence felt and their voices heard above the din created by unsupporting politicians, and some governments that are still not heeding the warnings of scientists and others involved with the environmental issues.

If you believe that change is needed in some area of your life, or in your community or country, don't passively watch from the sidelines--be proactive and gat involved. it'll give new meaning to your life.

'See you' all on Monday,

Kiki ;-)

Appreciate your specialness

Are there ways in which you find you are different than others? How does that make you feel? Does it make you wince, or are you confortable being just who you are?

A part of loving and honoring yourself is to recognize your specialness... and to appreciate it. Instead of worrying about being judged by others, really BE who you are... take ownership of this person that lives inside you, and then do everything in your power to allow 'it' to grow, develop, and shine. This is everybody's first and foremost responsibility to themselves.

Saluting the specialness in you,

Kiki ;-)

More on finding and honoring yourself

I received this beautiful poem today from my daughter Chitvan. A poem about finding, honoring, and cherishing ourselves.

Love After Love by Derek Walcott

The time will come when,
with elation you will greet yourself
arriving at your own door,
in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other's welcome,
and say, sit here.

Eat. You will love again
the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread.
Give back your heart to itself,
to the stranger who has loved you all your life,
whom you ignored for another,
who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror. Sit.

Feast on your life.

You may remember my quote from another post here: 'YOU are the one you've been waiting for!'

The only person to compete against...

is YOU, YOURSELF. Don't ever, ever, N-E-V-E-R compete with anyone. No good will come out of it. You will win from some, and lose from some -- you won't get better than you are. Compete instead, with yourself... and you will truly grow and evolve -- and will be better tomorrow than you are today. This is the only race worth running--against yourself!

Loving blessings,

Kiki ;-)

Searching for, and finding YOURSELF

I have this beautiful quote from Rumi, to share:

"Keep knocking, and the joy inside will eventually open a window and look to see who is there."

Also:

Roberto Assagioli, the father of Psychosynthesis, said:

"JOY is the KEYNOTE of the soul."

Put together the above two quotes to understand that our soul is within us, holding the energy of JOY in our core - waiting patiently for us to disconnect from the drama of life, and revelling in the JOY that is there. Easy as ABC, if you will but make that choice, to go within. Any takers?

In JOY,

Kiki ;-)

Anger - one letter away from D-anger

A discussion on anger came up in my conversation with someone yesterday. There was a time I too felt that anger in some situations was justified. But as I understood what's behind this emotion I have to disagree with all defenders of anger - NO MATTER WHAT THE SITUATION. Anger is NOTHING more than a response to fear. You can take that statement to the bank. That's all anger is! Fear is a primal emotion, that flares up whenever we sense ourselves in danger of any sort. If the danger is bigger than what we believe we can handle then we are faced by the 'fight or 'flight' choices for our survival. Stay and Fight, or escape through Flight are unconscious responses of human beings to any situation which feels threatening -- and given the fragility of the human body, we feel 'in danger' very quickly and very easily, and we experience fear. When we do not have the physical, emotional, intellectual resources to stay and 'fight' we tend to take 'flight', even if not literally - but this part I will address later. For now let's focus on the fear.

Fear, then, evokes a sense of helplessness and this helplessness gives rise to anger. The more fears we have, or, the more deeply we fear, the more prone we are to being angry. The more we deal with our fears the less anger we hold within. It might be a revelation to also realize that the more fear and anger we hold within, the more we attract situations and events in our lives that nake us fearful, and/or angry. It's our old friend, the Law of Attraction - up to its old tricks of attracting more to us what we are feeling within. But, how powerful it is to know that it's all under our control, and it's up to us to clean out the emotions within that are not serving us.

Stare your fears in the eye, and they'll vanish -- this I promise you.

To Cultivate Loving Relationships

In the past few days I have posted a lot of stuff from my personal collection of 'pearls' and 'gems' :-)... here's one more to wind down the week. Someone gave it to me a while ago, with no mention of the author, so here it is Author Unknown:

For Loving Relationships - try this:

When you feel unloved, start loving yourself and
then go out and love someone.

When you feel unappreciated, start appreciating yourself and
then go out and appreciate someone.

When you feel unacknowledged, start acknowledging yourself and
then go out and acknowledge someone.

When you feel untouched, touch yourself and
then go out and touch someone else.

When you feel ignored, start noticing yourself and
then go out and notice someone.

When you feel rejected, start accepting yourself and
then go out ad accept someone.

When you feel alone, find yourself and
then go out and find someone.

When you feel poor, start giving to yourself and
then go out and give to someone.

And THEN you will find someone who loves you, appreciates you, acknowledges you, touches you, notices you, accepts you, finds you, and gives to you.

In other words, when you feel awful...
Change your thoughts;
Love yourself -- love others;
Give to yourself -- give to others;

And if all fails...
Talk to God, or whatever Higher Intelligence you believe in, OUT LOUD!

Be compassionate with yourself,

Kiki ;-)

The Spirit of a True Healer

The author of the poem below 'The Greeting' is James Haba - this poem is a part of his Ten Love Poems, anthologized by Robert Bly. I'm posting it here as to me it embodies the spirit of a true healer/coach/mentor/guru/leader, and these sentiments epitomize her/his inner state - ego-less, in the spirit of service.

THE GREETING

You have been travelling.
I can see it in your eyes -
The unknown roads demanding new belief.
The light of your will in submission
to the pattern bringing us together.

I have been busy waiting,
putting fresh flowers on the table,
filling the lamps with kerosene,
arranging (as well as I could)
everything, so that you might feel
that you had arrived
at the right place
at the right time.

Hello
I am so glad that you could come.
And in honor of our being here together
Let us make a scratch on the wall of the cave.
We could talk.
We could begin with idle chatter.
I'll start
I'll say, "I love you".

Humbly, touching all lives with love,

Kiki ;-)

The History of Medicine

As someone who ONLY uses natural substances and modalities for my wellness and health I found the following chart very amusing:

The History of Medicine

2000BC Here, eat this root.

1000BC That root is heathen. Here say this prayer.

1805AD That prayer is superstition. Here, drink this potion.

1940AD That potion is snake oil. Here, swallow this pill.

1960AD That pill is ineffective. Here, take this antibiotic.

2000AD That antibiotic doesn't work anymore. Here, eat this root.

And to roots, I add my precious essential oils, organic groceries, my prized BEMER and hey-presto, every day I'm good as new :-)...

(For more information and education about the BEMER, please go to http://www.bemeramerica.com/kiki and expect to receive excellent health-related information.)

Tibet... again!

A famous quote, by Edmund Burke (1729-1797, a statesman and a philosopher) goes, "ALL THAT IS NECESSARY FOR THE TRIUMPH OF EVIL IS THAT GOOD MEN DO NOTHING." With China stepping up its rhetoric against that paragon of non-violence and peace, the Dalai Lama, is very painful to stand by and watch. No wonder people are coming together voicing their oppposition. Its not that the Tibetans are the only people being oppressed in the world, but the fact of their tolerance of the Chiness highhandedness, so peacefully, and relatively quietly has garnered them the support of all peace-loving people everywhere.

If this resonates with you, please google the words 'Tibet support petition' and please sign all petitions you can, to pressurize the Chinese government for more humane treatment of the Tibetans.

A quote by the Dalai Lama: "We are visitors on this planet. We are here for ninety, a hundred years at the very most. During this period we must try to do something useful with our lives. Try to be at peace with yourself and help others share that peace. If you contrubute to other people's happiness, you will find the true goal, the meaning of life."

In peace, and for peace,

Kiki ;-)

The Rules For Being Human

I have some real gems in my collection of articles, quotes and sayings. I am going to share 'The 11 Rules For Being Human' today. When I first saw them, over a decade ago, they were listed as anonymous, but later I found a little book based on these. I don't know which came first - these rules, or that book.

RULE #1
You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire period this time around.

RULE #2
You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called Life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid.

RULE #3
There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error experimentation. The 'failed' experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately 'works'.

RULE #4
A lesson is repeated until learned. A lesson will be repeated to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can then go to the next lesson.

RULE #5

Learning lessons does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

RULE #6
"There" is no better than "here". When your "there" has become a "here", you will simply obtain another "there" that will look better than "here".

RULE #7
Others are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself.

RULE #8
What you make of your life is up to you. You have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

RULE #9
Your answers lie inside you. The answers to Life's questions lie inside you. All you need do is look, listen, and trust.

RULE #10
You will forget this.

RULE #11
You can remember it whenever you want.

**************************

Powerful - huh? True? You bet! - even if it makes you uncomfortable. The most powerful for me are #s 2, 3, 4 and 7, 8, and 9. Accept them, or don't - the choice is yours. But remember that within this framework, the opportunities for finding and living in JOY are enormous, in fact, every step of the way.

Tibet and China

What a sad state of affairs it is when a government, especially if it has might and power, lives in fear. It then unleashes terror on citizens whose rights and liberties are horrendoiusly curtailed.

My deepest respect is reserved for the Dalai Lama, who has been put in the unfortunate position of being accused by the Chinese government of fomenting trouble. My loving and heartfelt support goes to His Holiness... and to the people of Tibet, and people of Tibetan origin worldwide. May Peace return to your hearts -- and may the Chinese government overcome the energy of fear, and instead be just and compassionate to people whose homeland it has overrun.

May peace reign in every heart, everywhere.

Cry Fergie cry...

My young friend who introduced me to the singer Pascale Picard has just today told me about a song by the singer Fergie called Big Girls Don't Cry. I had heard about Fergie here and there, and today for the first time heard her song. It's all about making difficult choices - a spectre that haunts us all. But there's a lot of strength in some of the lyrics where she says she 'must sit down and straighten up things that are not working for her'. Bravo, I said! But then she ruined it all by saying 'Big Girls Don't Cry'...

Please, please, please don't believe this. Don't buy into it. Specially you men out there - please 'dismiss' and 'reject' what someone said to you from the time you were little: 'Boys Don't Cry'--humbug... this is so NOT healthy. Cry all you want if it'll alleviate the pain in your heart. It's always, always better to cry than to SWALLOW those tears. It is swallowed tears that cause major dysfunction - so much better instead to find another way to release emotional pain and fear, crying being one...

Released inner pain leads to becoming lighter -- and is that not a good thing?

Kiki ;-)

A piano? a violin? a bass guitar? a tabla? a taiko?

Here's another fun exercise to help you manifest specially a spiritual goal. It got developed quite spontaneously last weekend during a Reiki workshop I was holding. We had a lot of fun with it and I hope you will too.

The exercise called for selecting a spiritual goal. I used my own goal as an example, which is to be an instrument for the Universe, to use as it sees fit, to disseminate the knowledge of the Universal Laws, for bettering human lives. As I used the word 'instrument' I really connected with it and felt the need to choose a musical instrument whose sound I resonanted with, embody it, and through 'my sound' create a healing vibration in the world. Although I play the Taiko, my instrument of choice for the purpose of this exercise was a Bass Guitar. Somehow, at a deep level and for an inexplicable reason, its sound seemed to be just right for what I'm to be, and do.

And what, then, is YOUR instrument of choice? Which instrument weaves its magic on you with the frequency of its sound? Choose one now, and then let's proceed.

In the next step we offer ourselves in service to the Universe, to 'play' us as needed, for the larger purpose of raising the vibration of people everywhere, so as to move them beyond their fears, to resonate with a higher frequency of 'be-ing'.

But then, the question arises: If we are going to 'hand over' this instrument, that we ARE, to the Universe, what then is OUR job, OUR responsibility, OUR WILL in all of this? In answer, I would like to say that I believe MY job is to keep this instrument in as perfect a condition as possible. Any student of music will tell you that the sound their instrument produces is the direct result of the care they take of it. I believe, in that same way, we are obliged to keep ourselves, as much as possible, in peak condition - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. And when the Universe needs to 'play' us, the orchestra will be divine...

I don't know about you, but I'm going off now to do some contemplation to the sound of a Bass Guitar :-)...

This unfortunately is true

There are these beautiful lines that Meg Ryan's character says to Tom Hanks' character in the film 'Joe and the Volcano':

"MY FATHER SAYS THAT THE WHOLE WORLD IS ASLEEP. EVERYBODY YOU KNOW, EVERYBODY YPOU TALK TO. HE SAYS THAT ONLY A FEW PEOPLE ARE AWAKE, AND THEY LIVE IN A STATE OF CONSTANT, TOTAL AMAZEMENT."

On one hand I feel it's none of my business, that there are all these people who are asleep -- and on the other, it tears up my eyes, and makes my heart bleed, to know how fine the line between being asleep and being awake is... BUT OH! THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO STATES OF BEING -- it's night and day, black and white, heaven and hell-- and it's SO easy to walk across, from one to the other, if we just accept that there is more to know and learn, than we do right now... and start the quest for this knowledge...

Will you be my wayfarer?

Truly profound...

A very dear friend shared the following from the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying -- for the longest time I used it as a benchmark for my personal growth. I'm happy to share it with you today.

A BIOGRAPHY IN FIVE CHAPTERS

1) I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost...I am hopeless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

2) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I'm in the same place.
But it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

3) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in...it's a habit
My eyes are open
I know where I am
It is my fault
I get out immediately.

4) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

5) I walk down another street.

And I, my friends, have changed many streets -- and invite you to do the same...

Much love,

Kiki ;-)

The body is the home/temple of the soul...

...so we must take good care of it... and planet Earth is the home for the body, it deserves our love, attention, and care as never before. The time is here when we need to make drastic changes in our thinking and become environmentally conscious. I sent out the below email 7 days ago and believe it needs a repeat.

******************

This touched me and is important to me. I hope you feel my heart as I write this.

Last year 2.2 million people turned off their lights in Sydney, Australia for one hour. Corporations and businesses joined in as well. The city went dark for only one hour. THE IMPACT WAS THE EQUIVALENT OF TAKING 48,000 CARS OFF THE ROAD. This year they are doing it again, and inviting the world to join in.

http://earthhour.org/

We all want to help the planet. We all want to do something, but get overwhelmed by all the information out there. This step is so simple. One hour. On March 29 at 8 pm your local time turn the lights off for one hour.

This 2007 movement from Australia is becoming global in 2008. You're not being asked to write letters to your local mayors or politicians or picket the businesses or anything. Just tell your friends and neighbors and invite them to participate. Then turn your lights off for an hour. That's all.

Additionally, if you wish, go to http://earthhour.org/

I am only one person. So are you. Together we are more.

"Be the change you wish to see in the world." - Gandhi

Napoleon said, Champagne in victory, and in defeat too...

My wine table calender had this quote from Napoleon Bonaparte on the March 7 page:

"In victory you deserve Champagne; in defeat, you need it." :-)...

How wonderful is that... 'in defeat you NEED it!' Now, now - don't look for your wallet to dash out to buy a bottle, even if it was Napoleon who recommended this. I'm using this metaphor to draw attention to the fact that when we suffer 'defeat', when in life things don't go well, plans go awry, people let you down, there are slips just as the cup nears your lips, then SLOW DOWN... don't beat yourself up - it's bad enough that you've suffered disappointment and emotional pain. Instead be gentle with yourself, treat yourself well, for if you don't who will? Many of us, at such moments, still turn to another for support, commisersation, sympathy -- we don't realize that it is our OWN company that serves us best in such times. The hurt inner child part of us can be RE-PARENTED ONLY BY US--and this is the sign of TRUE MATURITY. The healing that takes place by our OWN nurturing of ourselves has true and permanent results. A healed inner child stops attracting the same old hurtful stuff it has suffered from, often for years and years.

And if like me, you like Champagne, by all means, have a glass!

Sante, Tchin-Tchin, Saluta, Cheers,

Kiki ;-)

How to be in faith...

Here is another perspective...

Those moments, when our faith is tested, tend to be the very difficult ones -- people actually question if there's ANYTHING or ANYONE out there that is listening, is going to help in some way or do anything about our suffering etc. etc. To pass this test think of the connection we have with nature... and how we ARE a part of nature--the microcosm of the macrocosm. Human beings are the only species that are very disconnected from nature. But that doesn't stop nature from moving through us just as it does through every thing else.

A good time to remember this is when things are not going well in our lives. Think of the sun, that rises each day, and then at the end of the day sets gently, to rise again the next morning. Our moments of strife are similar to darkness overcoming us, at the end of the day. And when darkness DOES come, what are we expected to do? We turn off the lights and go to bed, to sleep. We KNOW that the sun will rise in the morning, and we will wake up to a new day. We don't stay up to fight our sleep and fret about the darkness. Similarly, faith IS knowing that the sun WILL rise the next morning, and the next, and the next... So, when 'darkness' descends on us, and we have trouble keeping the faith is a good time to remember that THAT sunset is not the last one--and have faith, that the sun will rise again, and a new day will dawn!

(A reminder: there'll be no entry tomorrow, Saturday, March 8.)

How I got happier and healthier

Yes, this is true! I got happier and healthier, and I mean all aspects of health--spiritual, mental, emotional and physical, by basing my life on the following premise, laid out in this quote by the American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892):

"RE-EXAMINE ALL YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD... DISMISS WHAT INSULTS YOUR SOUL."

Refusing insults to your soul is the key to our overall well being. It is what insults our soul that causes it grief and stops us from thriving. Yes, at a deep level of consciousness the soul is above and beyond the human experience of our worldly existence... yet it is true that the environment we provide for our soul either nurtures it, allowing us a positive and dynamic experience of a life well-lived, or puts our soul to sleep, turning us into machines that simply eat, sleep, defecate and procreate, living meaningless and miserable lives.

So far so good, you say, but how can one know what insults the soul? If I asked you to tell me all the things you didn't like about your life, chances are these are things in direct opposition to the needs and yearnings of your soul. One excellent way to figure out what you like if you don't have a clue as to what it is, is to figure out what you DON'T LIKE and DON'T WANT. This then becomes the starting point to discovering what's the opposite of these and you can start building a list of what you DO LIKE and DO WANT.

Make it your first business to get to know your soul and you'll be on your way to protect it from what insults it!

To BE in faith

My other blog entry on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi reminded me of a lovely anecdote I read about him several years ago. It was in one of Deepak Chopra's books about 'manifestation' and how we must live in faith and trust that our needs will be fulfilled.

This is how the story went:

The Maharishi was planning a huge global event and dictating all his ideas and details to his staff. At the end one person spoke up, worriedly, and asked Maharishi where would the funds for such a large event come from.

The Maharishi replied, very simply, "From wherever they are right now!"

Will you join me?

This touched me and is important to me. I hope you feel my heart as I write this.

Last year 2.2 million people turned off their lights in Sydney, Australia for one hour. Corporations and businesses joined in as well. The city went dark for only one hour. THE IMPACT WAS THE EQUIVALENT OF TAKING 48,000 CARS OFF THE ROAD. This year they are doing it again, and inviting the world to join in.

I am only person. So are you. Together we are more.

Love...

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's followers, Deepak Chopra was one, called him one of the greatest teachers of spirituality. My connection with him is that I received my first ever formal training in meditation from of his travelling meditation teachers, some 30 years ago. I'm happy to share below, one of his quotes on LOVE...

THERE IS NO DIFFICULTY THAT ENOUGH LOVE WILL NOT CONQUER,
NO DISEASE THAT ENOUGH LOVE WILL NOT HEAL,
NO DOOR THAT ENOUGH LOVE WILL NOT OPEN,
NO GULF THAT ENOUGH LOVE WILL NOT BRIDGE,
NO WALL THAT ENOUGH LOVE WILL NOT THROW DOWN,
NO SIN THAT ENOUGH LOVE WILL NOT REDEEM.

IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE HOW DEEPLY SEATED MAY BE THE TROUBLE, HOW GREAT THE MISTAKE, SUFFICIENT REALIZATION OF LOVE WILL RESOLVE IT ALL. IF YOU COULD LOVE ENOUGH, YOU WOULD BE THE HAPPIEST AND MOST POWERFUL BEING IN THE WORLD.

- The Late Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

'Hit the drum, as though it were your last chance to do it'

Most Sundays afternoons I have my Taiko Training Workshop. When our teacher doesn't get the desired result from us he likes to exhort us on by asking us to hit the drum as though it were our last chance to do so, assuming we would die after that (and go to Taiko heaven - haha... this is my addition :-)... that would be MY kind of heaven)... The funny thing is we all play very well when he says that -- and then of course he wonders why we don't always play so well :-)...

This came up today in my Taiko class and I wondered if I could suggest to the readers of this blog to do the same for some other things in their lives. What is it you would dearly love to do well? What one thing would actually make a difference for the better in your life? If you have identified that, think then what one step could you take to accomplish it, if you knew you wouldn't fail, and that this was your last chance to do it perfectly. Just as we do at our Taiko class, give your all to ONE action and you will see your one clean stroke will 'produce a sound so perfect' that all of you will revel in the sense of accomplishment. So, what is it going to be that you will take your best shot at? And once you do it, what will you follow it next with? -- till your life is a series of perfectly executed master-strokes?

Food for thought - what?
